Tara shares the story of how she got into podcasting.

If you know Tara, it might seem like she was literally born podcasting, but that’s not the case. Because of some family issues, she ended up being on her own at eighteen, and she struggled to make ends meet. Eventually she found network marketing, which was a really good starting place for her. She began to learn more about personal branding, and she decided having a podcast would be an important part of that.

When she started her podcast, she noticed that her friends in business were flocking to her with questions about it. They wanted to start their own podcasts too, and they wanted her help with it. For a long time, she ignored this “whisper” that was telling her to help people with podcasting. But finally, she decided to take on some podcasting clients. And she knew right away that this was her zone of genius. This is what she was truly passionate about. Sometimes an opportunity is staring us in the face. And we have to be brave enough to take it.

How to know if you are ready for a podcast.

First off, should you start a podcast? Tara says that there are no “shoulds” in business. While she absolutely believes that podcasts are powerful and profitable, you’ll never hear her say that you “have” to do it. But to know if you’re ready, ask yourself if you’re wanting to build relationships. If so, podcasting is one of the best ways to do that. When people hear your voice, they feel more connected to you than if they’re just reading your words. And podcasting is a passive experience. People can listen while they’re doing something else. They don’t have to catch you on a Facebook or Instagram Live or sit down to read something you’ve written.

You don’t have to have a massive following to have a podcast (but it can definitely help you grow your following). But Tara does recommend that you should be in a solid place with your brand. If you’re still figuring out your passion and what you do best, you might want to wait on starting a podcast. But if you are crystal clear on who you are and how your business helps people, it might be a good time to start.

How to leverage time with intentional content.

In my husband, Jeffrey Gitomer’s book Go Live!: Turn Virtual Connections into Paying Customers, Tara contributes a chapter on her repurposing strategy. To be intentional with your time, Tara recommends starting out with the longest form of content you can first (like a podcast or video). Then what you can do is repurpose that content and break it down into smaller pieces. With some editing, you can take the shownotes of your podcast and turn it into a blog post. You can take the main points you made and turn them into several social media posts. If you made a live video, you can take clips and put them on YouTube or on your stories. There are so many ways to repurpose your content!

The beauty of this is that first, it saves you time. You don’t have to keep recreating brand new content. Let’s be real: you’re going to run out of things to say eventually! But this also is actually BETTER for your audience! Some people like to watch something, some like to listen, some like to read longer forms of content, and some like short sequences. When you repurpose the same content, you can speak to all of their learning styles! Remember, too, that people need to hear things several times before they sink in. So don’t feel like you’re repeating yourself.

Where to begin if you want your own podcast.

Starting a podcast can feel very overwhelming because there is so much to learn. Tara recommends either keeping it very simple or hiring it out to someone. If you’re wanting to do it yourself, don’t try to do everything an expert is doing. Keep it straightforward by focusing on the things you’ll need. You will want to get a microphone– it can be something more expensive or very simple. You will need a way to record and edit audio. Zoom and Audacity are free. And you will need a host. Tara recommends Libsyn.

Tara has a lot of resources to help you get started, including her recorded FREE Ultimate Podcast Launch Extravaganza. This training will help you launch your podcast in just 14 days! If you do want to start your own podcast, TAKE ACTION. It’s not going to happen if you don’t do anything about it!
